If necessary the catalysat is pre-treated c.q. processed. This pre-treatment may involve such activities as straining, breaking etc. The catalyst is thermally treated in a fluidised bed kiln and/or rotating tubular kiln. The temperature if the kiln is adjusted to ensure the optimal incineration of hydrocarbons and sulphur and to recover volatile metals. The volatile vapours of the volatile metals are separated by means of a stripping column and sublimation filters.
