he had his car put in his father's name (more conversational. not a whole lot of regular americans run around using the word register. it's a fact.)

as a question the phrase is:
in whose name is the car registered?
who's name is the car in?

registered to me then would also be conversational as it is grammatically incorrect

wikipeida? as it is not written by grammar professionals or professionals for the most part, it can be wrong

registered to me is conversational if it is used at all in any case
grammatically it is flawed and frakly, it's awkaward, clumsly english

as you can see from the examples, it is also a conversational phrase. but hey, if you like bumpkin-poke go ahead and speak bumpkin-poke

and stay away from my grammar. my grammar is fine. but as most americans, when i type emails, sms's, posts on forums, etc.. i use the simplified butt-for-brains style my generation got used to seeing in such contexts (the one the stickler who wrote east shoots & leaves can't stand) anmeicans (including myself) are lazy on forums, in emails and sms texts. we can admit it. so back off.

Furthermore,
"Hopefully the brit in your office is just as competent in terms of english language as Ms. Nina 79"
You really have absolutely no idea what you have gotten yourself into with your comments regarding my grammar here. You really should consider backing down and take a deep breath.
If no one here had ever been told that I am gogolesque, you would probably never have started this whole little spat and never tried to insult me in terms of my grammar. admit it.

 Nina79

Don't call me darling and don't assume that I am in a good mood right now.
I am sick of defending myself all over the place and my mood has been royaly ruined for at least half an hour. If you want to know why I have so many names, read the vetka.
Sorry for the bluntness.

 Levitan

Your one and only problem is that you are always trying to defend and explain yourself. You should take things easy and be cool. That's my advice. Don't take the forum so seriously. And don't mind the nipplejoke. You should know how to take jokes. After all you grow up in the country of Richard Pryor.

Ok, Ok, in my humble opinion, in spoken language, you can "put the car in someone's name" and you can "register a car to someone". I would not use those expressions myself, especially in writing. But I have certainly heard them before. Again, I don't think it is the best way to say it, but I don't think it is fundamentally wrong.

I would say "register the car in someone's name." Suggestions with "title transfer" above should also work, especially in official DMV context.
