Hello everyone, have been checking out all your responses to my many questions yesterday - super helpful, thanks so much.

Can anyone confirm that сотрясать воздух (попусту)is the equivalent of "rock the boat (for no reason) or thereabouts? if not, any other trans gratefully accepted.

No, don't "rock the boat". :-)

It's basically "pontificate", "orate" "talk pompously" (and mostly "talk bollix", pardon me ... quaint Brit speak)

In other words, "that's a lot of wind", "idle words" "and all that jazz"
- you get my drift.

rock the boat = make trouble and risk losing or upsetting something; cause a disturbance that may spoil a plan. "раскачивать лодку"

"сотрясать воздух (попусту)" - без контекста, в самом общем виде значит говорить лиюо без надежды быть услышанным, либо для проформы, либо от нечего делать...
