Subject: OFF just letting you all know that i think everyone (and i am included) should be reading the book "Eats, shoots and leaves".i am now and i think a lot of folks here would enjoy it. :) |

imho there's nothing witty about that arse-dribble of a book. An old trout moaning about missuse of apostrophe... yea, very funny... the whole volume stinks of "unclean petty-coats under a modish gown", that is - of yawn-inducing, self-sentered, self-admiring chatter of a middle class suburbian old bag who's got nothing better to do than read misspeld adverts and shop-window-notes. Typical bourgeois attitude: "Dear Lord! How uneducated all these people are! How dreadful is their spelling and grammar! How glad I am not to be one of THEM. The book went to No1 bestseller for one reason only - this sort of "мещан во дворянстве от орфографии" likes nothing better then to read about people who, thay think, are 'uncultered', bacause it gives them immence pleasure to say: Golly Gosh! I would NEVER misplace MY apostrophe in such a dreadful manner. Oh, no! I am a cultured person... Total shite. Yuck! Anybody really interested in improving their English should put this book to where it belongs (and, most propably, where it was thought-up) i.e. a shithouse, and read any of the number of grammar and punctuation guides available. То же относится и к руссокой версии: Pозенталя надо читать, а не про панд. |

| personally, Shumov, i find the book amusing precisely becasue the woman is utterly insane. and nonetheless, she does have some good points. and the writing is superb. anyone who can discuss grammar and hold my attention while doing it, deserves a paper plate award reading "Award for the Best Rant of 2006" |

и имхо туда же. tentra, речь не о качестве перевода, а о target audience - те, кому это интересно/нужно, не будут читать это в переводе. само издательство, кстати, хорошие книшки выпускает, и можно заказать прямо у них |

| nephew, ну отчего же? Я бы, например, с удовольствием прочла бы аналогичную книгу по орфографиии и пунктуации, скажем, французского языка. Без перевода осилила бы вряд ли, а на русском - за милую душу. Если у целевой аудитории недостаточно высокий уровень знания языка (например, школьники или студенты младших курсов), то русский перевод - в самый раз. Опять же, английскую книгу может позволить себе далеко не каждый - все-таки дорогая она, а русская намного дешевле (в издательстве, кажется, 170 рублей, в магазине - 300). Но большая часть этой самой аудитории предпочтет, конечно, оригинал. |

2 gogolesque2 well... we must hold quite different views on what constitutes as 'superb writing'. A question of taste. An aquired taste, perhaps. If asked, I whould opine that Grammar should be discussed on academic level. On popular level it should be studied Not being waxed lyrical about. |

Shumov ok, it's not superb, but for popular writing it is pretty damned good. i'm not going to call it a classic though. but really, precisely the interest of how far this woman's insanity goes is what keeps me reading and the writing is really very good in the sense that it does hold your attention. grammar in my opinion should be discussed in any format possible in order that EVERYONE has a chance to understand it. grammar is like math. if they put it in terms which are interesting for you, you can do it. if they make it boring for you and cant teach it to you in a way which makes you remember it, then you are shit out of luck for the rest of your life, will never get it, and will forever tend to look like a bufoon in academic and professional settings. |

Well... almost... ))) ***if some guy/gal reads this and at least remembers that its is posessive and it's is for it is, i am happy.*** This passage kind of repits what I said: some people like to read that kind of "books" not because they want to find out about something they do not know but rather because they want to read about how many other people do not know what they do know, if you get my drift... There's nothing wrong with that - it is all very human. Although, I shall say it again, for anybody who wants to improve their grasp on grammar etc. (not their ego!), it is advisable to read books on Grammar rather on missuse of it. Needless to say, this is not in any way reflects on you personaly, and the fact that you wish all the gals & guys remembering their "shoots and leaves" makes you a very caring person. |

Well... almost... ))) -----it's not really defense... it was really just an attempt at a bit of conversation as i sit and waste away at work :) not because they want to find out about something they do not know but rather because they want to read about how many other people do not know what they do know, ----- and i am also finding out some things -- some differences between amer and brit punctuation (very useful in my opinion to know it) |
