velvet season Posted: 18 July 2007 09:07 AM Hi, everybody! Does this expression make any sense to you? In Russia, when talking of some vacation resorts where it may be (extremely) hot in summer, we use this “velvet season” for months from September to mid November, meaning that weather conditions are milder and more favourable. Thank you in advance for your attention and answers. Dave Wilton Posted: 18 July 2007 09:48 AM [ Report ] [ Ignore ] [ # 1 ] Administrator Total Posts: 233 But yes, it does make sense. Velvet connotes something soft and gentle, so using it as a metaphor for gentle, pleasant weather fits. We also have the velvet revolution from the Czech sametová revoluce, so a similar usage appears in at least one other Slavic language. |
