The origin of this expression is worth mentioning. Here maille designates a coin of negligible value, that you cannot normally divide, like a cent. But partir (cognate with partition in English) used to mean just that : to divide, so avoir maille à partir avec qqun means literally having a cent to divide , which is impossible, hence a situation of conflict.
