...the origin of this colorful phrase: When intrepid German explorers first encountered the gum plant (which is actually a tree), they named it the Unterkunftbaum, as there were lots of possums lodging in these trees. (unterkunft means "billet" and baum means "tree".) When them Germans spake about them possums in them trees, they said, in their fractured German/English, "Im possum billet-tree." Some of the gentle folk of the South understood that the Germans were saying "possum in a gum tree" (or "gum bush"), but those who didn't heard the word "impossibility". Thus, the phrase took on it's current meaning.

ИМХО ~ Надо заметить, что приведенная фраза имеет странный сарказм, т.к. Red Sox выиграли чемпионат в 2004 оду. Может, это - какой-то устаревший текст, когда Yankees держали пальмовую ветвь в течение 4-5 лет подряд?
