В классификации компаний на рынке. Есть №1, №2, №3, есть нишевые игроки, а есть эти самые ditch dwellers :)

Как бы это выразить компактно и красиво?

So the analysts all pressure them to grow, they grow too fast, they diversify too much from the core competency and they go into the ditch.

So the ditch-dweller, poor fellows will always be around either to die or to get taken-over through the process of M&A.
