| i wouldn't use 'flood,' simply because in english that implies being inundated with water at least ankle deep by rivers bursting their banks or torrential downpours. to use flood here would be runglish. americans would say, a leak upstrais caused/did water damage in my apartment, or i have water damage in my apartment from a leak ( or bursted pipe, or overflown washer) upstairs. |

В русском языке, как и в английском, существуют ДВА глагола - "затопить" и "протечь". Им в английском - по степени "подмоченности" :-) соответствуют flood и leak. Смотрим, что спрашивал аскер: **нас затопили Соответственно - как на этой ветке, так и на предыдущей - и был предложен адекватный вариант. Спросил бы аскер что другое - получил бы и другой ответ. |
| no red blooded american would say, we were flooded by neighbors upstairs. this is non-sensical in american english. words have denotational and connotational meanings. just because dictionaries suggest that zatopili translates as flood, it does not mean that it will be used by native speakers in a situation similar to what's described in the original post. usage is a tricky thing, so i guess i can understand the confusion. and if ur english is not up to the task, may i suggest putting question marks or imho, lest some poor soul take ur so-called advice at face value and then land on their ass for it? that wouldn't be good, would it? |

| wow, some people r incorrigible. to answer something like that would be doing myself a disservice. just once, thing, where did i ever say i'd never come back? links, please. ulviya, don't use "flooded." it's not a good option, this v person does not know whereof he speaks. a person secure in his correctness would not stoop to grade school name-calling. but it's exciting to watch, though, like a train wreck:-) |

Привет, внимательный звереныш, пишуший голосом Николая Дроздова.... в принципе, "leak" - тоже вариант, НО когда у нас объектом внимания является ПРОТЕКШИЙ ПОТОЛОК, КРЫША и тд. а когда у нас вода уже на полу - то все-таки "flood". подробности ищите в словаре синонимов. |

"by people upstairs's washing machine?" and u want me to take this semi-literate sentence as solid incontrovertible proof that flooded (without 'out' as suggested by v) is standard AE usage? please, see what the poster with a legal background answered to that querry "What caused the water damage? Was it a defective washing machine, defective repairs to the machine, a defective hose ( if so had it been replaced pursuant to hose manufacturers recommended age recommendations?) Did the occupant of the other condo have any prior indications of defects with the washer etc?" do u see any references to 'flooded' in the lawyer's answer (i use the term loosely here, to mean someone with enough expertise to answer legal questions)? no, s/he uses water damage. quod erat demonstrandum. sure, u can definitely google out some examples of flooded used in a situation like the one described, but watch out for the telltale signs of functional illiteracy when reading these examples. just because some high school dropout uses it does not meant it's standard usage. would u agree with that? |
