Subject: Help me find a mistake. Students attend seminars devoted to new methods of study. My friend said there's a mistake in this sentence, but I can't find it. Can you help me prove he's wrong or find a mistake, please? |

| I think you feel that "devoted" should only apply to a person, as in "devoted mother". I agree that it may feel that way, but the in reality it's not the case. "A museum devoted to photography" and "seminars devoted to new methods of study" are both examples of the same usage. |

Why, I got a little bit confused because the sentence that came next was They graduated American universities. I thought it was wrong (no preposition after graduated), so I decided that there might be a mistake in the mentioned above sentence too. It was not translation, it was proofreading. the sentence is not complete.. it is part of an idea to make it complete you can say "students will/are/shall/should attend seminars devoted to new methods of study." basically, the sentence you have a question about is not a sentence but part of an idea which the author did not complete. |

что-то и меня, как и Alex Nord резануло использование devoted. "seminars on smth" как-то привычнее... |

Скажите наконец, ГДЕ именно ваш друг нашел ошибку в приведенной фразе? Или он сказал: здесь есть ошибка, но я не буду говорить, где она, хоть убейте? Devoted to, имхо, можно, почему нет? Мы говорим "семинар на тему", "семинар по теме", "семинар, посвященный" тому-то и т.д., и т.п. То же самое в английском языке. Одни варианты правильные, другие менее правильны, но используются все равно, и никому в голову не приходит их забраковывать, поскольку они не режут слух. |
