Hi, everybody.

I would appreciate if you could help to understand the phrase:
You don't look at the mantle piece when you're poking the fire.

My two friends from the UK were drinking a lot of vodka when one of them said something like: "I've got me beer goggles on the night."
And the other one replied: "You don't look at the mantle piece when you're poking the fire."

To Glasnost: Thanks for the reference. But I am still confused. What do beer goggles have to do with mantle/mantel pieces.

IMHO, beer goggles are those gel-filled eyepads you put on before going to sleep after a stressful party.

Я не нашла объяснения, но буквально "Когда мешаешь кочергой угли в камине, на каминную полку внимания не обращаешь"
Я так понимаю, что оно должно значить, что когда занимаешься серьезным делом, не обращаешь внимания на внешний вид
