думаю здесь нет никакого скрытого смысла и понимать нужно буквально.

Переводится буквально, это из некой античной легенды: Pythagoras is ridiculed by Xenophanes for recognising a friend’s voice in the cry of a puppy (D.L.8.36), praised “as a man of great knowledge” by Empedocles (Porph.LP.30) and accused of being a charlatan, as well as a magician and miracle worker, by Heraclitus (D.L.8.6). He features in Apollonius of Tyana’s Mirabilia (6), where he foretells the future, is bitten by a poisonous snake, biting it back and killing it, appears in Croton and Metapontum at the same time and on another occasion reveals his thigh which was made out of gold.[30] Herodotus, however, describes him as “one of the more influential teachers of the Greeks”(4.95).
