According to statistical data, following 1970, when the profitability curve was beginning to flatten (would flatten out), next year would show a tendency for the average rate of profit to fall (demonstrated a steady downward trend), and the interest rate increase cycle would be over. |

a bit OFF: I can't really figure this out: is this one and the same person - gogolesque and gogoleque? |

Violetta-Konfetta yes its all me - typed too quickly, it happens |
gogoleque, the problem is that it is statistical data SINCE 1970 up to present. How about sequence of tenses in this case of repeated actions? I am at a loss here... AССORDING TO statistical data since 1970, as soon as the YIELD CURVE had (?)FLATTENED, the following year ? would have ? demonstrated a trend towards a drop in the profit rate... |

ket: AССORDING TO statistical data since 1970, as soon as the YIELD CURVE had FLATTENED OUT, the following year SHOULD HAVE demonstrated a trend towards a drop in the profit rate and the cycle of growth for interest rates should have been brought to a close. maybe this? |

2 gogolesque: maybe it's time to register, then ;) |
sets of successive actions - I would go with Past Indefinite's all the way +modal would whenever the curve flattened, the next year would see a profitability decrease trend, and the cycle of interest rate growth would come to an end (loose terminology, i am sorry, just wanted to express my tenses) |

Violetta-Konfetta cant register as gogolesque since i used the name on the forum before wanting to register.... is it that big a deal for you? |
|

I have only suggested. :( |
Shall и should have, по-моему, здесь не годятся.
to gogolesque Thank you, the only question is why you are using "should" (I am serious!). Does "would" sounds for you like a mistake here? |

ket: would sounds like a mistake - yes i would in the end say this: based on statistical data since 1970, as soon as the yield curve flattens out, the following year should demonstrate a trend towards a drop in the profit rate and the cycle of growth for interest rates should be brought to a close. |
gogo, can you please explain the grammar for should? i am really interested here |
gogolesque, Thank you. Shall try to find some explanations in the grammar books :-) . |
