Subject: Тут и подвал есть, и чердак, и фальшпотолок
Всем добрый день!

Помогите, пожалуйста, перевести предложение в таком контексте:

Дом большой, мест для упрятывания немало - тут и подвал есть, и чердак, и фальшпотолок.

Мой вариант:

The house is large, there is quite a number of hiding places – there are a basement and an attic and a false ceiling here.

Hi. Регистр снисходительно-гуттаперчевый надо р-а-с-т-я-н-у-т-ь.

There is pretty much space for hidden storage in this big house: both basement, attic and suspended ceiling.

The house is large and there are[1] quite a lot of hiding places in it – both a basement, an attic and a (false/suspended) ceiling.

[1] In standard English, strangely, 'there are' is slightly better than 'there is' here, because it refers to 'hiding places' -- a plural noun -- rather than to 'a lot'.

Compare:

* 'There are a lot of cars in the town centre' [because 'cars' = a plural noun]

with:

* 'There is a lot of pollution in the town centre' [because 'pollution' = a singular noun]

The house is huge; there are quite a few places to hide: a basement, an attic, even a dropped ceiling.

Какой смысл после развернутого ответа от носителя языка давать неправильный вариант с диаметрально противоположным смыслом?

Что-то я не понимаю, всегда both подразумевал "оба предмета", т. е. два. Но вариант уважаемого johnstephenson заставил засомневаться. Или "оба" в его варианте это "подвал" и "чердак и фальшпотолок"? А иначе три получается...

AsIs: "Какой смысл ........":

Because it's a forum -- a discussion group in which several people (not just johnstephenson) exchange ideas and make suggestions. Also, I'm not the only "носитель [английского] языка" on the forum.

Yellenochka:

You're right, in that 99 times out of 100 'both' only applies to two things/people. However, it's also occasionally used stylistically for emphasis, to show that several (three or even more) things/people are being referred to, and not just one -- as in the Russian 'и ...... и ...... и ......'

" ['Both' is also] Used as a function word to ...... stress the inclusion of each of two or more things specified by coordinated words, phrases, or clauses " -- Merriam-Webster

Alternative ways of expressing it in the asker's example include:

* 'a ......, a ......, (and) even a ......' (as in Lapelmike's example);

and

* 'a ...... and a ......, as well as a ......'

Вы будете удивлены, но "quite a few" означает "довольно много".

From "Practical English Usage" 4th Edition by Michael Swan:

Quite a bit and quite a few (informal) mean almost the same as quite a lot.

We’re having quite a bit o f trouble with the kids just now.

We thought nobody would be there, but actually quite a few people came.

From Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner's  Dictionary:

"You use the structure both…and when you are giving two facts or alternatives and emphasizing that each of them is true or possible.

Now women work both before and after having their children. Any such action would have to be approved by both American and Saudi leaders."

Aiduza: "quite a few" означает "довольно много" +1

If you want to say 'очень немногие', it's 'very few' in English.

Подвал и чердак - помещения, а подвесной потолок - плоскость. Я бы заменил на space above/behind a suspended ceiling.

только не "a suspended ceiling", а "the suspended ceiling", ведь участники разговора знают, что речь идет о подвесном потолке в определенном помещении.

Я бы также предложил "the hollow space of the suspended ceiling" или  "the hollow space of the dropped ceiling".

There is a whole bunch of places where one can hide things - ...

In this instance I would say "hiding spots" instead of "places".

А я все ломал голову - как можно спрятаться  в фальшпотолке. Изначально неправильно понял смысл. Но все равно where one can - три слова, to - одно.

Вы тут все Львы Толстые, что ли? Вам за знаки платят?
