Господа,

Возникла необходимость перевести две политические "должности": тайный советник и явный советник. Первый, судя по всему, больше выполняет роль "серого кардинала". Второй - публичная персона.

Первая должность до революции в Российской империи существовала - privy councillor, но можно ли ее использовать применительно к современной политике?

Будут какие-нибудь соображения по этому поводу?

'Privy Counsellor' is a title still used in the UK. It's an adviser to the monarch (not President or Prime Minister) who gives him/her advice on a private basis. They're typically senior politicians and senior judges (the latter to give the monarch advice on new laws, which he/she has to approve). However, the names of Privy Counsellors are advertised openly; there's nothing 'grey' or secretive about who they are. So for that reason I would avoid using 'privy counsellor', especially if it relates to the UK.
