My attempt:

The actor merges with his character.
"A great actor merges his soul with that of his characters."

I've just found this on the interwebz:

"The actor that played McCoy in the recent movie had the character just spot on. It was uncanny. Loved him."

hmm.. "Precise, true-to-life portrayal of the character". (maybe)

Most film enthusiasts recall John Barrymore's brilliant portrayal of Jekyll (1921) without trick photography or makeup but don't recall a German version directed by Murnau (1920) and Conrad Veidt's portrayal.

в субъективном смысле - my favorite portrayal (of this character)

суровый критик может выбрать что-то из диапазона:
good/best/greatest ever character portrayal.

в последнем случае м.б. the best owned portrayals (by actors).
e.g.: it's unimaginable that the actor's performance (in this movie) can be topped by anyone else.

I.Havkin,
Getting into character - это процесс вхождения в роль (когда еще нет гарантии попадания)

В зависимости от степени положительности роли (нет контекста) предлагаю избитое грубоватое клише "snug fit" ("fit snugly"), как, напр., тут (forgive me, ladies):
"... Frances, an accomplished actor, fit snugly into another feminine paradigm: the bitch. She did this to perfection, acclaim and robust numbers, but she probably didn't do a whole lot for the reputation of her gender. ..."
