Как сказать "повисла тишина"?
Я могу сказать только There was... - Была...

I think your 'There was an (awkward/uncomfortable) silence' are both perfectly OK. You can also say 'an embarrassing silence'.

You can also say 'an (awkward/uncomfortable/embarrassing) silence hung over them'.

If you're describing the beginning of the period of silence, you can say 'an (awkward/uncomfortable/embarrassing) silence descended (on/upon) them'. 'Upon' is slightly more dramatic than 'on'.
