Subject: за какое великое дело свободы! gen.
"Помните родные, за что погибаешь, за какое великое дело свободы!"

I am unsure about the grammar of the second part of the phrase (specifically why свободы is genitive).

I currently have it as:

‘Remember my people, what you are dying for, and how a great cause is freedom!’

Is this correct, or have I misunderstood it?

Just remember ..... that you are giving your life for the noble cause of (hence the genitive) liberation

"свободы" here is an attribute, it defines "дело", therefore it is in the genetive case

великое дело свободы = the great cause of freedom
