After a power increase the cladding stress increases instantaneously but the elastic nature of the cladding allows it to conform to the larger pellet geometry leading to a reduced level of stress in the cladding as stress equilibrium is being reached. The reduction of stress as time progresses is increased by the liner that acts as support inside the cladding Deconditioning: When a power reduction is performed the temperature is decreased and causes the pellet to shrink. The cladding will shrink too but at a slower rate that the pellet thus causing the gap to re-open (assuming the rate of the power reduction is fast enough). The clad stress will instantaneously be reduced and slowly approach a new equilibrium level as the burnup increases.
