"them" here implies "he /she"
i.e. "the person" seeking assistance might be either a male or a female, hence the pronoun "them"

про одного человека говорят во множественном числе (what makes) «them» (tick) для того, чтобы политекорректно не указывать на пол того человека (т.е. для того, чтобы не употреблять местоимение him / her)
