Affinity или proximity? В чем разница и как употреблять? gen.

Гугл переводчик и то и другое переводит как "близость". Эти два слова мне встретились в одном предложении, что и привело к вопросу. Есть ли значительная разница между этими двумя словами? Всегда ли они взаимозаменяемы и что имелось ввиду: Boas* argued that culture developed historically through the interactions of groups of people and the diffusion of ideas, and that consequently there was no process towards continuously "higher" cultural forms.
