Subject: Ужели
What does "Ужели" mean in English?

Here is the context:
Ужели ты обманешь бедную Лизу?

Please explain in English because I do not know Russian very well.

Thanks in advance.

The same as the word "неужели" (obsolete form).

Would you dare to deceive poor Liza?!

or:

Could you really deceive poor Liza?!

Utter astonishment of the speaker! Is it possible that you can do it...

"Ужели" is an obsolete, currently out of use variant of "неужели".
I'd rather translate the prase as "Do you really suppose to deceive poor Lisa?"

It means:

You are not going to deceive poor Liza, are you.

Why? How come you take it this way?

Because that's how it is. Trust me.
