Managing accounts is one of your primary tasks as a Microsoft Windows 2000 administrator. Chapter 3 discussed computer accounts. This chapter examines user and group accounts. User accounts enable individual users to log on to the network and access network resources. Group accounts are used to manage resources for multiple users. The permissions and privileges you assign to user and group accounts determine which actions users can perform, as well as which computer systems and resources they can access.

Although you may be tempted to give users wide access, you need to balance the user's need for job-related resources against your need to protect sensitive resources or privileged information. For example, you wouldn't want everyone in the company to have access to payroll data. Consequently, you'd make sure that only those who need that information have access to it.

Group Types
In Windows 2000, there are three types of groups:

Distribution groups
Groups that are used as e-mail distribution lists. They can't have security descriptors associated with them. You define distribution groups in domains using Active Directory Users And Computers.
