Кто-нибудь знает, каково официальное название?

на их сайте http://gupr.ugrainform.ru/ английского варианта нет.

http://rgp.agava.ru/ecocoms.htm#Khanty - вот здесь дается вариант такой:
State Environmental Conservation Committee of [] Region.
руководитель - chairman.

Но меня настораживает :) Я бы перевела State Сommittee on Natural Resources, или что-нибудь в таком духе.

А что вы думаете?

I normally translate this as 'the Main Directorate for Natural Resources [of the Russian Federation Ministry for Natural Resources] for the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District.'

OK, no uvazhayushchiy sebia perevodchik na takoy sluchay imeet drugiye, bolee utonchennye(=sophisticated :-) ) sposoby resheniya problemy. Naprimer, est' Division, as opposed to Department or, say, Directorate.
Ravno kak i dlia "Pervyi zamestitel' ministra" tozhe est', skazhem, amerikanskiye equivalenty, skazhem, Under Secretary (of Defense, or whatever) - for "pervyi zam.", est' Assistant Secretary - for prosto "zam.", i t.p.
Soglasen, shto napriamuyu dlia perevoda nashih realiy eto ne podoydet, no kak hotia by "prim. per." - polezno.

2V: согласен, убого, но 'здесь [in my firm] так принято.'© Далее, эти самые main directorates (at least those I've dealt with) call themselves so in their letterheads. Moreover, my clients don't care a damn what directorates or administrations might call themselves. Whether i write a memo of my own or translate, main or non-main goes clean through their heads causing no lesions. I've heard no complaints, so far. No one has ever been confused, as far as I recall. None of my clients, for that matter. So i don't take it as a matter of appropriate translation or appropriate identification; i just give them a tag to identify by, and leave it at that.

And one more point: a verbatim name given to a Russian authority in English will confuse no one if someone has to TRANSLATE IT BACK INTO RUSSIAN, WHICH OCCURS FREQUENTLY. Wnenever you give a FANCY ENGLISH NAME to an upravlenie or something that YOU THINK would not confuse English speakers, PLEASE THINK of a poor girl somehwere in Uryupinsk, Russia, trying to guess, offline, what that YOUR effing AUTHORITY, AGENCY OR DEPT. might mean -- upravlenie or glavnoe upravlenie, or what, because correct NOMENKLATURA DOES STILL MATTER in official correspondence IN THIS COUNTRY, IF YOU HAVE NOT YET FORGOTTEN.

Earl, you are right saying that it does not matter what you call it for the English, it only matters for the Russian, and that poor girl, like I am, sitting here nowhere in Nefteyugansk, translating the bullshit some other God bless him translator translated there in Moscow and arising confusion in the minds of Russians reading the back-translation.
