It is known that the performance curves of turbo-compressors are not stable up to the zero flowrate. On the left-hand side of the max. pressure towards lower volume flowra-tes a so-called "rotating stall" occurs in the impeller ducts. This leads to unstable inflow (separating of the flow in the impeller). At a certain min. volume flowrate the flow may separate completely in the impeller. This appears as medium backflow from the com¬pressor discharge side to the suction side. During this procedure the temperature of the compressor rises abruptly on the suction side. This temperature change is monitored upstream of the impeller by means of the switching points "alarm" and "shut-off". A resistance thermometer (Pt-1OO) is used as monitoring device. The interpretation has to be effected in controlling system.
