Или specify the reason? Хотя это, наверно, ближе к "уточнить причину". И все-таки specify имеет значение "уточнять" и в Мультитране, и в "Нашем словаре" Лингво. |

Я думаю, тут смысл "выясняют причину" (или выбирают из возможных вариантов). Тогда лучше investigate, try to find the cause (Не "знают причину и лишь детально уточняют") |
