с детства по правилам учебника Старкова/Диксона - we played football
Немного повзрослев, мы узнали что футбол - это soccer
Недавно узнаю, что в америке футбол это - soccer, в UK - это все-таки football
Может кто-нибудь даст авторитетный ответ.
Более того - hockey - это хоккей на траве, а ice-hockey - это хоккей на льду.
Информация от нэйтива, который преподает английский.

знать про football им вполне достаточно, тем более что учат их все равно британскому английскому

всё просто:
футбол = football (брит. англ.), soccer (ам. англ.)
ам. футбол = American football (брит. англ.), football (ам. англ.)

и когда на американском телеканале показывают футбол (нормальный, который ногами по круглому мячу), и комментатор говорит, что вася пупкин is a very capable footballer, то конечно же подразумевается вася пупкин - игрок в американский футбол.

We were recently asked which came first: soccer or football? Soccer first appeared in print in 1889; football has been kicking around since the 15th century.
Football is the more inclusive of the terms: it refers to a number of games, including what we Americans call soccer. Football can refer to American football, with two teams of eleven players; it can mean Canadian football, with twelve players on each side; it can mean Australian Rules football, where two teams of 18 battle it out on a longer field and with eight, not two, goalposts; and it can refer to British rugby, which is similar to Australian Rules football but which has 15 players and is much more physical. "hockey" means "ice hockey"
the other kind of hockey is called "field hockey".

But in Britain, they call field hockey "hockey" and hockey "ice hockey".

Я лично "соккер" никогда не использую (из-за акцента почему-то всегда получается "сосун"). Обычно говорю "еюропиан футбол", и меня прекрасно понимают.

ага, а потом перебираешься в южное англоговорящее полушарие, а тут 4е вида футбола - Rugby League, Rugby Union, Aussie Rules (Australian Rules Football) и Soccer. при этом 'footy' - это Aussie Rules, а 'football' крепко зависит от контекста и, часто, национальности собеседника. попробуй тут разберись. ))
