The permeability of the formation can be estimated by either a Drawdown or Build Up analysis. Drawdown permeability is calculated using

C is the shape factor (to account for the fact that the flow pattern is not exactly spherical, due to the presence of the borehole) - which is equal 2902 for the tool used; q is the flowrate and |j is the filtrate viscosity. These can be for Spherical Build Up, early in the pretest and in thick, clean homogenous zones and Cylindrical Build Ups (Horner Plots) where the flow is constrained by the upper and lower boundaries of the zone. The three approaches for estimating permeability (drawdown, spherical buildup, and cylindrical buildup) often produce three different permeability values, and at first glance, a very poor agreement with each other. Permeabilities derived from MFT measurements are influenced by several factors: radius of investigation, reservoir heterogeneity, formation damage, invasion profile anisotropy, range of measurable permeability. These factors are tend to cause the build-up permeability to be less than the drawdown permeability, which in turn is less than the horizontal permeability.
The main problem associated with Wireline Formation Tester's distributed pressure measurement occurs in low permeability reservoirs and is known as supercharging.
