Как много специалистов по синхронному переводу в России?
Почему у меня возник такой вопрос? Я сейчас смотрел на канале Вести 24 интервью Меркель на Давосе с синхронным переводом. Не всегда удавалось вникнуть в суть сказанного ею. Во-первых, переводчик через слово произносит …э.. э… э…, во-вторых, когда начинает переводить быстро, заглатывает концы слов – и получается набор слогов, типа, ан ду пр вы ки…. И приходится думать что же сказал переводчик, где же тут вникать в мысли Меркель. :)))

нормуль перевод - лапидарно, но без фактических ляпов, в стиле Лени Володарского
бывает и хужее...

I find it hard to criticize the interpreter because I find myself in similar situations when the speaker is rendering the message very fast and I play "catch up" all the time. I've heard that German is especially difficult because the verb is at the end of the sentence and one has to wait until the end of the sentence to understand the meaning correctly. I am sure there are interpreters who perform flawlessly but most of my colleagues are "mere mortals", we are prone to stress, fatigue, sometimes personal issues.....affecting the quality of interpretation from time to time.

My problem when I do a simultaneous interpretation is to find short Russian equivalents, if I do not have them in my mind right away, I am lagging behind...

the things u r saying say r absolutely correct, but
1. that guy interpreted the chancellor and he was supposed to have the relevant skills
2. if u start lagging behind then compress the speech and translate only the most important info...

наши переводчики новостей вообще доставляют...никогда не забуду перевод суда по делу Тойоты в прямом эфире. Казалось, что справа от переводчика стоял чел с валерьянкой, а справа с корвалолом.

Hi Alex,

Thank you for good advice. Unfortunately I am working less as a conference interpreter (which I prefer) and more as a court interpreter where I have to interpret everything to the best of my ability :) and that phrase in the interpreter's oath "saves" me.

At the conferences I do compress sometimes and sometimes everything is fine. We all have "bad days" from time to time.

давайте, каждый из нас начнет требовательнее относится к себе лично, оставив в покое неудачи (более везучих и знающих))) коллег... глядишь, и общей лажи в глобальном плане станет меньше...

Really, it's not my cup of tea, nevertheless I feel I must jump in and desperately utter:

There is no need to stack up lame excuses.

Think of it this way. If a German Chancellor can not be provided with adequate interpretation, then 1) who the hell can? - it's not a stinking PTA meeting we are talking about, for God's sakes, it's the hub of the EU, the richest European country speaking out through her leader, and there's no way a decent high-profile interpreter can be found/hired? - 2) it can actually affect people, polls and economies. And all because "We all have "bad days" from time to time". You may have a "bad hair" day, but if you got a headache and, say, Putin + Obama need your service right away, better take a tylenol pill or find a replacement for yourself.

Well, I work with a lot of interpreters and we support each other because we KNOW what it takes sometimes to go 170-200 words a minute! I sympathize with the guy. A lot of times the interpreters are given the text of the speech beforehand and then listeners can enjoy the smooth rendering of the so-called "decent high-profile" interpreter. Two months ago I walked into a NASA conference, it was an emergency request, last minute....they discussed missions to Mars, no preparation on my part.:) There are different situations and one can only judge when he or she has experienced it for him/herself.
