Subject: Road to hell
There is an excellent English aphorism (from Dr Johnson): “THE ROAD TO HELL IS PAVED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS”. This means essentially, that oppressive or despotic political/social systems often start out as well-intentioned and benevolent ideals. When I was in the USSR in the 1970’s I spent a lot of time trying to translate this with reference to the Soviet system (not that I didn’t recognise that there were good things about the system). Now PC (political correctness) is becoming an oppressive ideology in Britain, though originally based on the desire for fairness and egalitarianism. Can anyone supply me with a good translation of this aphorism, and also of ‘political correctness’?
