Dispersion curves, plotted in the frequency-velocity domain, constitute the main input used in inversion schemes leading to estimations of the shear-wave (S-wave) velocity-depth profile.

The dispersion characteristics of surface waves are displayed by using a wavefield transformation from the time-offset (t-x) domain into the phase velocity-frequency (c-f) domain. Then shot gathers can be transformed into the intercept-slowness (v-p) domain by using a slant-stacking method followed by a ID Fourier transform over the intercept time.
