Насколько я знаю, top-line album -- это сборник произведений, которые часто исполняются на ежегодных экзаменах в музыкальных школах. Для каждого инструмента есть свой альбом.

В старые времена top-line albums выходили в виде нотных сборников, сейчас они выходят и в виде грамзаписей.

Чаще всего такие альбомы издаются для духовых инструментов (мне чаще всего попадались для трубы, валторны и тромбона, и иногда еще для тубы), поскольку произведения, в которых на этих инструментах солируют, относительно редки. А на экзамене надо играть именно соло.

Нет, это именно top line.

Вы партитуру когда-нибудь видели? Ноты для солирующего инструмента (или голоса) пишутся выше всего. Это и есть top line. Ноты для оркестра или аккомпанирующих инструментов идут ниже.
