Пишу диплом и никак не получается это предложение сформулировать красиво. Больше всего волнует "starting gun".
Подскажите, как лучше.

Захожу в автобус со стартовым пистолетом, чтобы освободить себе место.

В конце концов я вытащил (может быть и выстрелил - нужен контекст) пистолет: и вот место в автобусе освободилось. Т.е. в результате (испуга или действий пистолета) появилось место в автобусе. КОНТЕКСТ??

Спасибо за участие, видимо проще полностью переосмыслить предложение, не принимая во внимание starting gun.
Вот контекст:
I should say in advance that I live in, out of and from my bus. That
means that everything that I need must have its place and this is also
the case for me with my many needs (eating, sleeping etc). These are
demanding starting points as five weeks in Scotland, with mountain
climbing, the visiting of much mud and isolated trips to islands etc.,
demand considerable equipment. Off we go then =/ but let’s not rush
it. First lists are written, added to, things are crossed off, added back
on, clothing, utensils etc are sorted, piled up and after some shaking
of heads, re-stacked.
It carries on like this for several days.
Then, finally, the starting gun: space is made in the bus. This is a hopeless
undertaking, what with all the pre-sorted piles of everything
conceivable: After all, as my esteemed Mr Murphy, of Murphy’s
Law, says, when you open a can of worms, you’ll need a much
bigger one to get them all back into.

И вот, наконец, звучит стартовый выстрел (в смысле "поездка началась") - я пытаюсь найти себе место в автобусе.
