Why do police say "freeze" when they captured a criminal with a weapon?

I usually yelled something like "drop it a** hole" but I only worked as the real police confronting real bad guys with weapons. I'm sure the writers of those shows know more about it.

Those would be TV, movies and video games. Real life they don't say freeze, I have ridden with police officers enough to know this. If they have a weapon it is "DROP THE GOD D@MN WEAPON AND PUT YOUR F*CKING HANDS ON YOUR HEAD"
