в прошлом - и этом году на Russian Securities Infrastructure and Operations Forum иностранцы вполне уверенно употребляли "babooshkas" в отношении всяких мелких клиентов (в конкретном случае речь шла об обслуживании частных лиц регистраторами).

come to think of it, here "babushkas" means not just old women, but the most socially disadvantaged, defenseless segment of the population, implying that taking money from them is morally reprehensible. viewed from this angle, in ae the babushkas' counterparts r widows and orphans. for ex, if u want to smear the way somebody got rich, u can say, he made his fortune by taking the last pennies from widows and orphans. therefore, here i'd redo the the second sentence of my original post by saying, it is high time we stopped making money off of widows and orphans by making a move into unregulated services.

then again, baushkas can stand for captive customers, whataver the age and gender. providing residential telephony at highly regulated rates with low, if any, margins, is not profitable, hence the necessity of moving into unregulated services. the trick here is that other socially mobile captive customers may switch to internet or mobile telephony, but the impovereshed babushka can hardly afford a handset or a computer. iа that's the case,i'd live grandmas, as was originally posted.
