Subject: Марк Твен Вопрос для знатоков. Работал ли Марк Твен на золотых приисках?Mark Twain... was working on gold-mines. Нужно указать, правильное ли это утверждение. Вот что нашла. Few people know that Sam Clemens (Mark Twain) was interested in prospecting for silver and gold before he ever became an author. Fewer still know that he only got into writing because he couldn't make a living as a miner and prospector. Later, he wrote a number of humorous stories about his times out in the Nevada deserts and the mother lode country in his book "Roughing It". Other interesting stories and thoughts about his time in Northern California and Nevada were published in various short stories and non-fiction books. Значит, работал? :) |
По-моему, это скорее вопрос "для тех, кому не все равно" :) И стоило бы пометить как офф. |
Да, SirReal, согласен работал он, in a way :) After the Civil War effectively closed business travel along the Mississippi (which was being used as an invasion route by Union troops), Twain was unable to continue working as a riverboat captain. He briefly served in the Confederate Army, then rejoined Orion, who had recently won a position in the Nevada territory government as reward for his work on President Abraham Lincoln's re-election campaign. Twain traveled with his brother to Nevada, then commenced a year's work panning for gold and silver. These experiences would later provide the basis for his volume 'Roughing It'. For a year Twain panned only occasionally, content instead to mock the entire venture by producing comedy missives for the nearby Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. |
Хм, об этом в любой версии его биографии говорится. Или существуют споры по этому поводу? |
Спасибо, знатоки английского и коллеги. Да, тут народ поспорил насчет формулировки :) |
