I think whether to translate or transliterate should depend on your target audience. For a general audience, I would find equivalents to those words in English. An average reader of a general-purpose article should not have to go to wikipedia to understand what you mean. The fact that these Russian words are transliterated in wikipedia does not mean that they have become widely-accepted terms in English. If, on the other hand, your target audience is historians and ethnographers, then you could give those words transliterated into English in cursive type face. I would still, even in that case, provide a translation or explanation in parentheses. |
