Ежегодно Союз охраны птиц России выбирает птицу года. Выбранная птица в «свой» год оказывается в центре всеобщего внимания. Идет сбор данных о ее численности и распространении. В 2010 году птицей года выбрали чибиса.

Data about the population and areas of distribution of these birds are collected(отредактируйте это предложение, пожалуйста). Lapwing (какой артикль здесь употребляется с чибисом) is chosen the bird of 2010.

"The chosen bird" - лучше сказать "the selected species"
Идет сбор данных о ее численности и распространении - Data on the population and the environment of the selected species is collected and updated.

я бы вообще ушел и от selected и от chosen.
Лучше в таких случаях использовать глаголы to name или to announce.
Data заменить на information; habitat/area of distribution - на range.
