так как обращаются на "ты", то формальный вариант (your presence is required / we require the pleasure of your company, etc) не оч. годится в переводе.....

лучше проще:

Please join us at the celebration of the/our plant's 20th birthday! The festivities will take place in N on December 29th.

Про assisting.

Защищать вариант до последней капли крови не буду.
Получил его от одного из лондонских брокеров на красивой открытке в начале девяностых годов.
Помню, тоже все отделом размышляли насчет помощи и присутствия.
Сошлись на том, что в словаре нашли что-то похожее на то, как у Коллинза, и успокоились. Отправитель письма был британец. Язык его, он его и покорежил по-свойски, если что не так.

Может, кстати, Дорис очень оценит приглашение в такой форме ...

Но, вообще в чем-то, если не полностью, уже согласен с вами -... assistance в значении participation ..

Если приглашение поступило от личного секретаря Елизаветы Георгиевны и начинается словами Her Majesty commands me to request your assistance at the State Opening of the Parliament. или что-то в этом духе ... то, пожалуй, да....))) ... Но для "Дорогая Дорис" -- это перегиб.... А насчет вашего британца -- он просто вы?*:нуться захотел. Уже в 90-х годах позапрошлого века такой вариант был архаичным и смотрелся как нарочито-вычурный!...
