kath, You may want to keep in mind that Soviet Union practices (and Russia still practices) conscription; virtually all members of armed forces ranked below warrant officer were conscripts who serve relatively short terms and have no retirement benefits. So to be characterized as an "отставник", one would need to be a career military man, most likely an officer. A typical Soviet "отставник" would have been ranked between major and colonel immediately before retirement at a relatively early age (between 50 and 55). |
