Subject: WW2 - Japan
I'm transcring/translating. The word SOUNDS like Hinayan (Хиньян) and apparently it is one of the places reached by Russian troops in 1945. There was a mountain there and a very narrow road. I think it's the name of a small town or village. Does anyone know? In either Russian or English?

It's possible. THis is from an interview with an 89 year old woman living in Achinsk. She very audibly says that she made it to Japan. Perhaps she got it all mixed up. She doesn't sound like she's particularly educated, so she could have gotten it all wrong. Plus it was so long ago. And conditions were not most favorable.
However... are there any other possibilities?

Thank you, Watchkeeper.

Kath, may be it is Хеньян (Henan, also Ho-nan, province in eastern China. Henan is one of China's most densely populated provinces. Its terrain comprises mountains in the west and densely populated plains in the east.)

Below you can find a list of (arguably) Japanese territories occupied by the Soviet Union in 1945:

"In August 1945 the Soviet Far Eastern Forces was ordered to attack the Japanese forces. The Second Far Eastern Front took charge of the occupation of the southern Sakhalin and the northern Kuril Islands to the north of Urup. The Pacific Fleet was ordered to occupy Kunashiri, Etorofu, Habomai and Shikotan. They were occupied in the end of August to the beginning of September 1945."
