I get this pang for Manhattan, where I am never farther than a block from bodega, never more than a raised arm from a cad.

pang - yearning
bodega - usually an unglamorous type of grocery store+wine shop run by hispanics in a hispanic neighbourhood
cad - person who behaves dishonorably

try your sentence now :))

Perhaps the most common shop in New York City is the "bodega," or maybe I should say the "deli." In Brooklyn, I often find a store that Manhattan residents would call a bodega referred to as a deli.

bodega and deli are not the same thing. bodega is a deli, but a hispanic deli. that's teh main difference. many deli's in nyc are run by jews and italians, but you would never call them a bodega. the dictionary claims that bodegas sell wine - but in NYC a deli, by law, is not allowed to sell wine, only beer. therefore - a bodega is a hispanic deli that sells groceries, beer, hot&cold sandwiches and coffee to go.
