I would avoid using the word "$ss". Many (myself included) consider this word to be derogatory. Although this word is used quite liberaly in movies and even on television these days, it is still a strong word (similar to the Ж-in Russian). The Russian context is quite neutral, so I would stay neutral in English, too.
