Suppose that a gas-carrying pipe-line ruptures within a city. The authorities must evacuate the affected areas; but which these are will depend on the strength and direction of the wind, the height and density of the buildings, and the nature and release rate of the gases.CFD can simulate these effects; and so CFD-using authorities can quickly make the right decisions; but only if they have computerised their city lay-outs in advance.
