annaa, considering that classes beging at 8:45 pm in most high schools, many school-related activites r penciled in for before the first bell of the day rings, and that students have to be bused to school often from afar, u'd be hard pressed to find the time to do anything other than to shower, gulp down cereal and orange juice, and hotfoot it to the nearest school bus stop. if u believe a high-schooler would wake up before dawn to do extra-curricular work, that'll be news to me. i m sure ther r some freaks and geeks like that, but they r hardly representative. |
Карнет, I'm thoroughly enjoying our serious discussion on such a trifle matter. But the Russian expression doesn't apply only to high-schoolers, nor does it apply exclusively to extra-curricular work. It doesn't apply necessarily to America either (Have you heard there are other places on this nice planet?). Moreover, I've seen many times in films how boys teenagers work as mailmen to get some pocket money (a kind of job that is supposed to be done in the morning and before school and by no means after school). |
And to join this discussion, albeit late, free from study, in-between study hours, leisure time, off hours, etc. as always - context, context, context. 2Карнет - I don't know where you went to high school, but you can't generalize like that. My particular school had 2 shifts, seniors started around 8:15am and were let out around 1:00, meanwhile freshmen and sophomores started around 9:00am and were let out around 2:30. And to avoid sounding like a complete geek, I did manage to run around the track before school started. Although as Annaa pointed out, the original Russian phrase does not pertain to High School or America necessarily. |

A lot of kids have their hockey, soccer, tennis, etc. practices before school, sometimes starting as early as 6 am. |
