High pressures being generated on board that are fed through pressure hoses to the guns in the water, present hazards to personnel working in the vicinity of the compressors and air lines. The operating air pressure used in most systems is 2,000 psi (136 bars). The air we breath at sea level exerts a force of 14.7 psi (one bar) on our bodies and surroundings. Atmospheric pressure multiplied approximately 140 times is 2,000 psi which the human body cannot endure. Air at 2,000 psi exposed to any part of the surface of the human body can tear the flesh. At a distance of a few feet (a meter or so), it can force dust, air, or even oil particles through the skin and into the bloodstream. The compressors, storage tanks, pipes, lines, and fittings used to carry and control this extreme high pressure are specialized equipment, and must be handled with caution. Ignition can occur by oxidation of oil or other hydrocarbons in the piping at self-sustaining and accelerating rates due to heating and chemical action. Oil can ignite in piping due to high air temperature as a result of faulty operation of compressor cooler. Such ignitions can be averted by keeping the compressed air and air piping free of oil and other combustible contaminants. 1. All work activities should be in compliance with back deck operational guidelines. 2. Deployment and recovery of the gun arrays are under the control of the Lead Mechanic.. 3. Safety equipment to be worn includes hard hat, safety boots, life vest and harness. 4. The Bridge should be notified of all deployment/retrieval activities and the vessel should avoid making turns during the operation except in emergencies. 5.
