The definition of evidence challenge Upshur and Tracy’s (2004) fourth challenge is the ‘definition of evidence challenge’. The issue here is what will be admitted as evidence in EBSW practice. As Upshur and Tracy (2004, p 201) note, “practitioners from backgrounds in the social sciences and humanities (to say nothing of law) may differ with colleagues in clinical epidemiology in their conceptualization of evidence”. Some place greater weight on quantitative information whereas others place greater weight on qualitative information. Upshur and Tracy conclude that the idea of a univocal understanding and agreement regarding evidence may not be sustainable in medicine. What about
in social work? We agree that we should adopt an inclusive view of evidence, and
that professionals need to be prepared to critically assess evidence using appropriate criteria.
