Subject: "Разводить" кого-то
Коллеги!

Есть идеи по поводу перевода "разводить" кого-либо?
take somebody for a ride, pool the wool over somebody's eyes, to lead on?

Спасибо всем!

Посмотрите у Палажченко, там довольно подробно эта тема обсуждалась:

to pull someone's leg, to play someone. There are other expressions depending on particular context.

"To lead someone on" has a slightly different meaning. It means "to make someone hope for something, where there is no hope." A girl accepting a date from, or flirting with, a guy whom she doesn't like at all, may be "leading him on."

ms801, with all due respect, in Russian it has a much broader and varied meaning than that.

To V: Are you talking about "leading someone on"? If so, I agree, it can be used in other situations, and in some context, could mean "to deceive" or to "con" someone. I thought, "Разводить кого-то" presupposed intent, while "lead someone on" could be quite unintentional. But, I would be the first one to admit, I may not know all the connotations of "Разводить." Pls, let me know if I am totally off on this one. ;-)

Нет, уважаемый ms801. Вы не совершенно off base here.
Просто дело в том, что русский термин "разводить" настолько богат значениями и полисемичен, что одним только to pull smb's leg / to play smb... etc его не "покроешь".
Например, to pull smb's leg, ... etc не покроет русского "поля значений" типа "развести на бабки/деньги" - т.е. "to rip off", to pull a fast one on (that sucker)...
