The pathologic specimen and tissue cultures showed no evidence of infection. No viral particleswere seen on electron microscopy. On hospital week 5, she underwent placement of a percutaneous tracheostomy. A follow-up chest CT showed a tooth in her left lower bronchus, which was removed by bronchoscopy. She subsequently developed a right lower lobe infiltrate and high fevers and was started on aztreonam and clindamycin for a presumed nosocomial pneumonia.
