Подскажите, пожалуйста. Staff captain, staff chief engineer - как перевести? Должности на пассажирских судах. Смущает слово "staff"...

Staff captain - старший помощник капитана
Staff chief engineer - старший механик, имхо

капитан и старший механик
учитывая что капитан правильно называется master, можно подумать что стафф тут от балды.

Забавный вариант.
Не приходилось слышать раньше.
Тогда получается по объему и характеру обязанностей, и у этого механика также, это классические кадровики-помполиты машинной и палубной команд.

Тогда стафф кэптэн тянет на первого помощника или помощника капитана по кадрам.

At other times, the job is just listening. Поэтому я придерживаюсь точки зрения, что это офицер, отвечающий конкретно за персонал. Плавающий кадровик.

У нас у пассажирского помощника для этого был пассжирский администратор. Он с бортпроводницами разбирал их проблемы.
У директора ресторана (chief purser) для этих целей был администратор ресторана.
На палубе хватало боцмана, а в машине механиков было больше чем мотористов, и их всех (палубу и машину) окучивал общесудовой помполит.

старая тема, видно, но опишусь. встретила в описании работы корабля Лузитания упоминание о том, как учредили должность staff captain: тогда на капитанах пассажирских лайнеров лежало очень много "левых" обязанностей по части развлечения важных персон. Кораблями типа Лузитании было и без того очень сложно управлять, и компания-владелец решила внедрить на них новую должность. Staff captain взял на себя "социальные" обязанности капитана, освободив того от необходимости тратить время и силы на "важных гостей".
